Moving is very rarely something people look forward to, but when it comes to relocating in sweltering heat during summer, it can be especially unpleasant. As an experienced San Diego moving company, Bernardo Moving & Storage has handled countless summer moves, and we’ve got some tips to help make yours smoother and less stressful.

Plan Ahead

As with any move, it’s best to prepare as far in advance as possible. Summer is the busiest season for professional moving companies, and booking ahead helps you get the day and time that’s most convenient for you.

Move During the Middle of the Month

Save yourself a bit of money by choosing to move in the middle of the week, and the middle of the month. The first and last days of the month are particularly in demand, as are weekends, so try to book at slower times for moving companies.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Cotton and linen are ideal:  With their sweat absorption abilities, these materials offer quick evaporation to keep you dry. Avoid anything black or dark-colored, as these colors absorb more heat, and while it’s tempting to wear sandals to keep your feet cool, sneakers are a much safer option.

Start Early

UV rays from the sun are the most intense between the hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. When possible, early morning moving is the best way to skip the hottest parts of the day.

Stay Hydrated

Generally, it’s best to plan to keep a day’s worth of water on hand for everyone in your moving party. You may also want to stock up on beverages containing electrolytes to help your body recover from the exertion of moving.

Apply Sunscreen

Anytime your skin is exposed to the sun, such as through a car window or while you’re moving things in and out of your new home, you risk burning, so play it safe and use some SPF.

Watch for Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses

Overheating and heat-related illnesses are serious, and it’s important to recognize the symptoms. Symptoms may include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • General Confusion
  • Muscle Cramps
  • Fainting
  • Nausea

If you or anyone with you exhibit these symptoms, get out of the sun immediately and into some air conditioning. Make sure to rehydrate and lie down for a bit if at all possible.
