As a professional San Diego moving and storage company, Bernardo Moving and Storage understands that you don’t always get to choose when you move. Even though winter moves are often cooler, they can also bring about other struggles. Luckily, our experience as local and long distance movers has helped us to learn some tips and tricks that can make your winter relocation easier.

Budget Carefully

With all of the presents, parties, and traveling around the holidays, it is easy to go over your usual budget. When you throw your winter moving costs into the mix, your purse strings could get really tight. In order to avoid a lot of stress, you should start planning for your budget and setting aside money for your move months in advance. As the time to move draws closer, keeping your budget in mind as you make purchases will help you avoid overspending.

Avoid Holiday Traffic

The holidays are some of the busiest travel days of the year, so if you can, you need to avoid relocating during those times. Even if you aren’t moving on the actual day of any major holidays, you should still watch for holiday shopping traffic. You can easily double your travel time and spend a while sitting on the highway if you don’t time your winter move right.

Prepare for Inclement Weather

While snow isn’t common in San Diego, you might drive through some bad weather to get to your destination, especially if you’re heading east across the country. Depending on where you’re going, you might need to gather salt, rubber mats, and tarps to protect your new home and the movers from the winter weather. If you are planning on helping with any of the unpacking, you should keep a bag of warm clothes, such as coats, hats, and gloves in your car so that you can easily access them.

Pack Decorations Separately

A lot of our customers think that moving during the winter means they don’t get to celebrate the holidays. However, this is not the case. If decorations and traditions are important to you, we encourage you to discuss your needs with your movers. We are more than willing to make accommodations so that your decorations get packed separately. To make sure that you get put them up as soon as they are delivered, ask that we label them with instructions to put them in your new living room.
